On November 20, the City of Liberty Hill submitted its application to attain the status of an International Dark Sky Community, reflecting its commitment to preserving the night sky through effective outdoor lighting regulations and community engagement. The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) recognizes such communities for their stewardship of dark skies and responsible lighting practices. The application process can span one to three years, typically involving three rounds of revisions before final certification by the Dark Sky Places Committee. Liberty Hill’s initiative began in 2020 due to growing concerns over light pollution, leading to a series of concerted efforts, including a night sky quality survey and the retrofitting of city lighting. City Council Member Diane Williams expressed pride in this milestone, highlighting the city’s dedication to safeguarding its night skies for future generations.
