Pitkin County commissioners are reviewing an ordinance aimed at amending the county’s land use code to combat light pollution and preserve the night sky. This initiative, led by Snowmass Capitol Creek Caucus Board member Martha Ferguson, addresses concerns that increasing residential lighting is diminishing the area’s traditionally dark skies, which is essential for both wildlife and ecological health. The proposed amendments would impose restrictions on exterior lighting from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., with various exemptions and limitations to ensure safety while minimizing light trespass. Prohibited lighting types include decorative and flashing lights, with homes permitted seasonal lighting during specified months. Following a positive first reading by the Board of County Commissioners, further public discussions are scheduled for January 22, 2025, to engage community members and raise awareness about the effects of light pollution on the environment and quality of life.
