As Rochester moves forward with its citywide conversion to LED street lighting, residents are voicing their concerns and suggestions regarding the new technology. A recent meeting hosted by the Upper Monroe Neighborhood Association highlighted various opinions, with some residents expressing discomfort over the brightness and intrusive nature of the LED lights compared to traditional sodium lamps. The city has been gradually transitioning to LED since 2017, with over 75% of streetlights already converted. This shift aims to reduce energy use, save costs, and enhance visibility for crime prevention. In response to community feedback, the city is considering implementing various suggestions, such as using amber lights and ensuring dark sky compliance. Additionally, residents can request shielding to mitigate the impact of the lights on their homes. As the project is expected to be completed by December, city officials emphasize their commitment to addressing resident concerns and improving community engagement in the process.
