Vineyard Wind is set to test its new aircraft detection lighting system (ADLS) on 12 offshore wind turbines this week, which promises to reduce nighttime light pollution for residents on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Currently, the turbines’ blinking lights have been a source of frustration for islanders, as they are visible from miles away. The new system is designed to keep the lights off unless an aircraft approaches, at which point the turbines will flash red. Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus Moeller confirmed that the system is expected to be operational soon, with the intention to implement it on every newly commissioned turbine. This development comes as the company is also addressing issues related to the removal of defective turbine blades. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management estimates that, once fully implemented, the ADLS will limit the turbine lights’ activation to less than four hours annually.
