A research team at Technische Universität Braunschweig (TU Braunschweig) is pioneering the integration of microscopic LED technology into artificial intelligence (AI) computing to enhance power efficiency and performance. Collaborating with Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences and ams OSRAM, the team is developing a neuromorphic computing system that mimics biological neural networks using energy-efficient microLEDs. This innovative approach, utilizing gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors, could potentially reduce power consumption by a staggering factor of 10,000 compared to traditional silicon-based systems. Early success includes a demonstrator capable of recognizing numerals, indicating progress toward creating a highly efficient “artificial brain.” With projections that supercomputers will consume a third of global electrical energy in a decade, this research could play a crucial role in addressing future energy demands in computational technologies.
