Minister Aims to Address Road Safety Issues Linked to Enhanced LED Headlights

In response to concerns over the safety of LED headlights on vehicles, Labour MP Graeme Downie highlighted that they can blind other drivers, despite statistics indicating no negative correlation between advanced lighting technology and road vehicle collisions. Edmund King, president of the AA, reported that many of their members feel overwhelmed by the brightness of LED lights, especially from higher vehicles like SUVs, with three-quarters experiencing glare from oncoming headlights. National collision data showed that dazzling headlights contributed to 216 incidents in 2023, a slight increase from 211 the previous year, but much lower than figures from 2017 and 2013. The Government has initiated independent research to investigate headlight glare, with findings expected by summer 2025, amid public concern over the impact of brighter lighting on road safety.
