At a recent meeting of the Okeechobee County Commissioners, Mayor Dowling Watford expressed deep concern over the potential loss of the night sky visibility due to light pollution, emphasizing its emotional impact on the community. The commissioners discussed proposed additions to the county’s land development regulations aimed at reducing light pollution, particularly around the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, a designated Dark Sky Park. New standards would require downward-facing lighting fixtures for new installations to limit upward light and light trespass that obscures stars. While existing lights will not need replacement, any new fixtures must comply with the standards, which aim to safeguard the county’s night sky and enhance energy efficiency. The proposed regulations include detailed guidelines on lighting intensities, fixture types, and prohibitions against upward-directed light, acknowledging that the preservation of the dark sky benefits both residents and visitors.
