As of March 31, 2025, over 188,000 LED street lights have been installed across Jammu and Kashmir under the Government of India’s Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), which aims to enhance energy efficiency in public lighting. Launched in 2015, the initiative, managed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), has led to significant nationwide power savings of approximately 8.8 billion kWh and financial savings of Rs 6,178 crore for municipalities. While the program has been largely successful, EESL currently faces outstanding payments of Rs 2,700.54 crore from various states and urban local bodies. Additionally, plans for future expansion to include Ladakh are anticipated, which will focus on improving connectivity and energy efficiency in both urban and rural areas.
