A new Rs 91-crore planetarium is currently being constructed at the University of Mysore’s Chamundi Hills campus, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAp). Unlike traditional planetariums, this facility will feature an innovative LED dome system that provides a vibrant, immersive experience with a wide color spectrum. The planetarium will showcase a 15-meter diameter dome tilted at a 15-degree angle, allowing visitors to experience the night sky without needing to recline. The state-of-the-art system utilizes 8K LED lights and SkyExplorer software for realistic astronomical visuals. Set to open by September next year, the project also includes the Cosmology Education and Research Training Centre (COSMOS), aimed at education and public outreach, with funding from several government agencies.
