The University of Texas at Austin’s McDonald Observatory is leading efforts to protect the night sky in West Texas through its Dark Skies Initiative, launched in 2010. Recently, oil and gas facilities in New Mexico joined this initiative by adopting new lighting guidelines designed specifically for their industry, as announced by the Dark for the Park Alliance. These guidelines, which focus on reducing unnecessary light pollution while ensuring workplace safety, include strategies like using downward-facing lights and amber-colored bulbs. A pilot program with Franklin Mountain Energy (FME) resulted in a remarkable 60% reduction in lighting energy consumption and a 99% decrease in skyglow from retrofitted sites. FME’s commitment to these practices earned them DarkSky Certification, establishing them as the first oil and gas sites globally to receive this recognition. The collaborative efforts aim to enhance both worker safety and environmental sustainability while preserving the natural beauty of the night skies across the Delaware Basin, a significant region within the Permian Basin.
