The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has announced an updated version of its Horticultural Lighting Technical Requirements, effective April 18, aimed at enhancing the efficacy and quality of LED products used in controlled-environment agriculture (CEA). The global CEA market, valued at $7.8 billion in 2023, is expected to grow significantly, driving demand for more efficient lighting solutions. The updated requirements increase the photosynthetic photon efficacy threshold for DLC-listed products by 8.7%, ensuring they are at least 45% more efficient than traditional non-LED options. Additionally, lamps will no longer be eligible for qualifying product lists due to low application numbers. This move reflects the DLC’s ongoing commitment to promoting energy-efficient lighting, important for both cost savings and sustainability in CEA, which have been increasingly influenced by the legalization of cannabis cultivation and demand for locally produced food. An informational webinar on the new requirements is scheduled for March 25.
