The Gerringong Lions rugby league club is not only a prominent sports organization but also a vital community fixture in the South Coast township of Gerringong. Over the years, the Lions have significantly contributed to local infrastructure, saving governments hundreds of thousands of dollars through self-funded improvements to their facilities, notably Michael Cronin Oval, a bustling hub for sporting events. In response to the growing demand for space due to an expanding roster of teams, including junior, men’s, and newly added girls’ and women’s sides, Liberal candidate for Gilmore Andrew Constance has pledged $200,000 for improved LED lighting at the Oval if elected on May 3. This enhancement, supported by Deputy Leader Sussan Ley, aims to facilitate increased training and game schedules, benefiting the entire community. Lions president Alan Miller emphasized the challenges of managing numerous teams on one field and highlighted the club’s strong community spirit, driven by local volunteers. With additional nighttime activities expected to boost revenue, the funding could greatly enhance both the club and local economic activity.
