The Permian Basin, the world’s largest oil reserve located in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, is experiencing a dramatic shift in its once pristine nighttime environment due to extensive oil drilling. Over the past six to seven years, sky glow in the area has surged by 700%, raising concerns for workers and wildlife affected by this increased artificial lighting. In response, Franklin Mountain Energy has collaborated with Dark Sky International to implement measures that reduce light pollution at their sites. By retrofitting existing locations and constructing new ones with energy-efficient lighting practices, the company achieved a 60% reduction in lighting energy consumption and minimized light scattering by 99%. This initiative not only conserves energy but also restores the natural night skies, earning Franklin Mountain Energy the distinction of being the first oil and gas site globally to receive a ‘dark sky’ certification.
