The Smart Street Lighting Project, launched in 2018, aims to replace 56,500 streetlights in Bradford with energy-efficient LED lighting, alongside the removal of 15,600 outdated lighting columns, at a cost of £45 million funded through loans. During a recent meeting of the Keighley Area Committee, council members reported significant progress in the project, noting that the upgrades have resulted in an £8 million reduction in street lighting energy costs since 2018. The new lights not only require less energy but also feature centralized control and automated fault reporting, enhancing efficiency and reliability. When fully completed, the initiative is expected to decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 6,000 tonnes annually. However, community reactions to the new lighting have been mixed, with some residents appreciating the warm glow while others find the brightness overwhelming.
