The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is set to enhance illumination in the periphery areas of New Town by installing high mast LED floodlights, responding to the rapid development and increased construction activity in the region. Currently, approximately 36 high mast floodlights illuminate key locations in New Town, but officials note that the existing sodium vapor streetlights are outdated. The new LED panels will consume less electricity and are projected to halve the existing monthly electricity expenses of around Rs 40 lakh. The upgrade aligns with state efforts to implement more energy-efficient lighting solutions under its Green Cities Mission, with pending projects that include replacing sodium vapor lights along the VIP Road. The initiative is praised by local residents for its environmental benefits and cost savings. The work is expected to significantly improve lighting in key areas such as Infosys, Rajarhat PS, and Vidhyasagar Matrisadan Hospital by the end of this year.
