The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is set to enhance safety at state intersections by installing new under-mast LED lights over the next five years. Designed to provide additional illumination in areas where standard lighting is impractical, these LED spotlights will be mounted on existing signal poles, reducing installation costs and complexities. UDOT has already implemented around 150 units across Utah, with recent installations in Ogden and St. George, to combat alarming pedestrian safety issues — an average of 43 pedestrian fatalities have been reported annually since 2019. The initiative aims to enhance visibility for both pedestrians and motorists, particularly in poorly lit areas, ultimately creating a safer environment for all road users. UDOT plans to prioritize intersections with minimal lighting or high pedestrian crash rates as part of this effort.
