The Hill Country Alliance (HCA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Central Texas’s night skies, has announced the first recipients of its Night Sky Preservation Fund, aimed at combating light pollution across seven counties. Established in 2024 with support from the Coypu Foundation, the fund encourages local nonprofits, government entities, and small businesses to implement initiatives that enhance the quality of the night sky. The awarded projects include efforts to monitor sky quality, promote night sky-friendly practices, and pursue International Dark Sky Community designations in various locales. HCA’s Executive Director, Katherine Romans, emphasized the community’s commitment to safeguarding the region’s celestial beauty as it faces the challenges of urban growth and light pollution. For those interested in supporting this initiative, donations can be made to the Night Sky Preservation Fund.
