North Yorkshire Lighting Initiatives Recognized for Safeguarding Night Skies

A leading advisor has lauded outdoor lighting initiatives in the North York Moors National Park and Howardian Hills National Landscape for their success in reducing light pollution and preserving the night sky. Dan Oakley, chair of the committee advising DarkSky International, highlighted the collaborative efforts of local communities, including Ampleforth Abbey and surrounding villages, to retrofit lighting and receive accreditation as Dark Skies Friendly Communities. This initiative, funded by Anglo American, has led to thousands of external lights being modified to minimize glare and enhance nocturnal habitats. With several other parishes planning to participate, the region is setting a precedent for protecting dark skies. The efforts are part of the ongoing 10th Dark Skies Festival, aimed at raising awareness about light pollution and encouraging broader participation in conservation efforts.
