Official Aims to Alleviate Road Safety Worries Linked to Brighter LED Headlights

Motorists are increasingly expressing concerns about the blinding effects of brighter LED headlights on the roads, prompting campaigners to highlight the issue amidst official reassurances about road safety. Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood stated that national statistics do not indicate a negative trend linked to advances in lighting technology and vehicle collisions, despite rising reports of drivers feeling dazzled by oncoming headlights. AA President Edmund King noted that three-quarters of their members have experienced glare from headlamps, particularly on taller vehicles like SUVs, stressing the need for further investigation. Labour MP Graeme Downie echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that while LED lights may improve visibility for drivers, they pose risks to other road users. The Government has commissioned independent research on headlamp glare, expected to yield insights and potential solutions by 2025.
