Franklin Mountain Energy, an oil and gas company in southeast New Mexico’s Permian Basin, has taken significant steps to mitigate light pollution from its operations. The company recently received certification from DarkSky International for implementing measures at three Lea County facilities to protect the night sky, particularly near Carlsbad Caverns National Park. As part of the Dark for the Park Alliance—a joint initiative with the park service and the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association—Franklin Mountain Energy will utilize practices such as directing floodlights downward, using warmer amber lights, and minimizing unnecessary lighting. These changes, which are intended to enhance safety, cut energy costs, and preserve the natural views for stargazing and wildlife, mark a significant step toward sustainability in the fossil fuel industry, with the certification being the first of its kind for a fossil fuel company. The initiative reflects a growing commitment to balancing energy production with environmental preservation in the region.
