One Missouri Park Achieves ‘Dark Sky’ Community Status, Enhancing Nighttime Stargazing

Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville, Missouri, has been officially recognized as an Urban Night Sky Place, earning certification as a “Dark Sky” community. This designation highlights the park’s commitment to minimizing light pollution from nearby urban areas, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the night sky much like previous generations. Missouri State Parks Director David Kelly emphasized the park’s significance as a serene escape where guests can enjoy a darker environment. To achieve this certification, the park implemented a light management plan aimed at reducing outdoor lighting’s impact on the night sky. With this certification, Thousand Hills State Park becomes one of over 220 parks globally dedicated to preserving dark skies.
