The small Queensland town of Winton, known for its opals and dinosaur fossils, is aiming to boost sustainable tourism by becoming an accredited “Dark Sky Community.” With a population of just 850 and a struggle to attract visitors during the scorching summer months, locals are advocating for the recognition that would highlight their pristine night skies and commitment to reducing light pollution. Naomi Miles from the Australian Age of Dinosaurs noted that dark sky tourism is gaining popularity and offers a way to fill accommodation during off-peak seasons. Winton’s Mayor, Cathy White, acknowledged the need to attract year-round visitors and mentioned upcoming plans to manage outdoor lighting. If successful, this initiative could not only enhance tourism but also position Winton as a key destination for stargazing enthusiasts in Australia.
