PavCo’s Lavish Expenditures for the World Cup

As Vancouver prepares to host seven World Cup matches starting June 13, 2026, preparations at B.C. Place stadium are underway, with significant investments in infrastructure and amenities. The province’s facility management company, PavCo, has secured contracts for approximately 11,500 square meters of sand-based sod to ensure an optimal playing surface, which includes contingency hybrid turf. Additionally, PavCo plans to enhance the stadium’s lighting system to meet FIFA’s higher standards, having awarded a contract for 76 LED luminaires. The renovations, backed by the provincial government, could cost taxpayers up to $581 million, equating to roughly $83 million per match, as they also consider upgrades to the scoreboard and cybersecurity systems.
