Franklin Mountain Energy (FME), an energy company operating in the Permian Basin, has become the first in the oil and gas sector to receive DarkSky Certification for its commitment to responsible lighting practices, successfully establishing three sites in Lea County, New Mexico. This certification, conferred by DarkSky International, acknowledges FME’s efforts to enhance nighttime environmental quality while ensuring safety and security at its 24-hour sites. The company’s retrofitting initiatives have resulted in a remarkable 60% reduction in lighting energy consumption and an estimated 99% decrease in skyglow, significantly improving the visibility of the night sky from locations like Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The Dark for the Park Alliance, a collaborative initiative aimed at preserving night sky quality, produced a lighting guidance document to assist other companies in adopting similar practices. FME’s co-founder, Audrey Robertson, emphasized the importance of balancing operational safety with environmental stewardship, highlighting that this partnership represents a successful model for dark sky preservation.
