Philadelphia Officials Highlight Advancements in Streetlight Enhancement Initiative

Officials in Philadelphia celebrated the success of a major initiative to replace over 130,000 streetlights with energy-efficient LED fixtures, a project that has been in the works for over a decade. Since its launch in August 2022, approximately 83,000 LED lights have already been installed, with an expected annual savings of $8 million in energy and service costs. The $91 million project is anticipated to pay for itself within ten years. Emily Schapira, president of the Philadelphia Energy Authority, noted the potential impact on crime reduction in areas with new lighting, with more detailed findings expected from a University of Pennsylvania study in 2025. Additionally, City Councilmember Jim Harrity highlighted the project’s benefits in creating job opportunities for the city’s youth. The final completion of the project is slated for fall 2025.
