Seoul Semiconductor scored a significant legal victory in a patent infringement case against Philips Lighting (now Signify Group), as the German District Court of Düsseldorf ruled in favor of Seoul on November 19, 2024. The court mandated the recall and destruction of Philips products that infringed on Seoul’s patents related to Color Rendering Index (CRI) 70 technology, which is vital for home lighting and other applications. Each violation could incur fines of up to €250,000. This ruling was reinforced by the German Federal Patent Court’s confirmation of the patents’ validity on December 17. The outcome is anticipated to impact markets worth over $100 billion, affirming Seoul’s position as a leader in optoelectronic technology with its substantial portfolio of over 18,000 LED patents. CEO Chung Hoon Lee emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property to foster innovation and fairness in the marketplace.
