Pilot Initiative for Improved Lighting on Twickenham Green Aims to Boost Community Safety

Richmond Council is launching a 12-month pilot program to enhance community safety by installing solar-powered LED lighting along the central path of Twickenham Green. This initiative responds to long-standing requests for improved lighting following the tragic murder of Amelie Delagrange. Although lighting was initially deemed ineffective for safety, advancements in technology have led to support from the Metropolitan Police, making it a viable solution for boosting personal safety and confidence in the area. The new motion and daylight sensor lights will dim during quiet hours and brighten with movement, promoting energy efficiency and minimizing wildlife disruption. Council leader Cllr Gareth Roberts emphasized the project’s aim to create safer public spaces, particularly for women and girls, while also prioritizing environmental considerations.
