Northern California residents are in for a rare opportunity to witness the northern lights, or aurora borealis, on the nights of October 3 to 5, following the second-largest solar flare of the current solar cycle earlier this week. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued geomagnetic storm watches, suggesting that the vibrant display could be visible well beyond its typical locations closer to the poles, potentially reaching as far south as Southern California. Best viewing chances will occur late Friday into early Saturday, with optimal conditions requiring clear skies and minimal light pollution. This year has already seen sightings of the aurora in Northern California in May and August, and experts anticipate more frequent displays as the sun approaches the peak of its 11-year cycle in 2025.
