City officials in Albany have reported that as of last week, 2,391 of the planned 12,500 new LED street light fixtures have been installed as part of a $6.5 million lighting upgrade initiated in January. The environmentally friendly LED lights are designed to enhance safety and reduce maintenance needs compared to the older lights, which have had prolonged outages. Renee Nickles, the city’s light superintendent, highlighted the improved visibility these new lights provide, especially during misty conditions, and noted a decrease in repair requests. The installation is being carried out by MetroPower, which offers a 10-year warranty and commits to responding to any light failures within 24 hours. Additionally, the city is working on a $25 million advanced metering system to monitor the new lighting infrastructure for any issues.
