Councillor Steve Foulkes, Chair of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Transport Committee, inaugurated an £11 million LED lighting scheme in the Queensway Tunnel during a ceremonial event. The project includes the installation of 1,058 LED lights, 230 new electricity distribution boards, and over 100,000 meters of power cabling, resulting in a 60% annual reduction in the tunnel’s carbon output. Foulkes highlighted that this upgrade, completed ahead of schedule, plays a crucial role in the city region’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2035. The new lighting system, which has a 25-year lifespan, is expected to lower electricity costs while maintaining high-quality illumination, and it aligns the Queensway Tunnel’s efficiency with the previously upgraded Kingsway Tunnel. This initiative is part of a broader investment strategy to modernize the tunnels and enhance the area’s transport network.
