The Rangeley region is set to enhance its recognition for stargazing by working towards certification as a Dark Sky International Community, led by the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust and its partners. This initiative aims to preserve the night sky through quality outdoor lighting regulations, educational programs, and community engagement. Aligning with International Dark Sky Week from April 21-28, the program highlights the importance of dark skies for ecological, cultural, and scientific health while addressing the issue of light pollution. Residents are encouraged to participate by pledging to minimize outdoor lighting, join a virtual night sky tour led by John Meader on April 25, and enter a Night Sky Photo Contest. The contest invites submissions of stunning night sky images, promoting appreciation of the celestial beauty and fostering community involvement in conserving the natural night environment.
