As light pollution increasingly obscures the night sky, concerns grow over its impact on both human and ecological well-being. In an era where satellites, including the controversial Starlink, and the proliferation of LED lighting contribute to this environmental challenge, astronomers note a notable decline in visibility of celestial bodies, affecting both nighttime navigation for species and cultural practices within Indigenous communities. Advocates for dark skies are pushing for legislation that may recognize a legal right to darkness and starlight, rooted in the emerging concept of “rights of nature.” This movement aims to highlight the intrinsic value of natural darkness for biodiversity and human culture, amidst fears that the legal and regulatory frameworks in place are insufficient to combat the pervasive threats posed by artificial lighting.
