Dr. Li Ma, a researcher at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Institute for Sustainable Horticulture, has secured a $540,000 grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Mitacs to explore how LED lighting can enhance greenhouse strawberry production. This three-year project aims to tackle the challenges faced by strawberry growers, especially in light management amid changing climate conditions. By utilizing advanced LED technology, the project seeks to optimize light conditions tailored to the plants’ growth cycles, ultimately resulting in higher quality strawberries and promoting sustainability in farming practices. The initiative will also emphasize training and collaboration with industry partners, including Sollum Technologies and Star Produce, to improve local food security and reduce reliance on imported strawberries.
