Light pollution from coastal towns is endangering seabird populations in the Atlantic archipelagos of Macaronesia, which includes the Canary Islands, Azores, and Madeira. The LIFE Natura@night project aims to combat this issue by mapping light pollution and collaborating with local municipalities to implement lighting master plans that reduce harmful artificial light. This includes the installation of energy-efficient LED lights and the removal of lighting units in sensitive areas. Alarming trends show increased light pollution coinciding with urban expansion, particularly affecting young seabirds that rely on natural celestial navigation. Since the project’s inception, over 800 disoriented birds have been rescued, highlighting the urgent need for effective mitigation strategies. The initiative aligns with the European Commission’s environmental objectives, including the Zero Pollution Action Plan, aiming to protect both biodiversity and human health.
