The Potomac Valley Audubon Society (PVAS) kicked off the new year by hosting a program on light pollution, presented by Dark Sky advocate Jesse Melton at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History & Education in Shepherdstown. Melton, representing the Bolivar-Harpers Ferry DarkSky chapter, highlighted the pervasive issue of light pollution, which obscures the night sky for 99% of the U.S. population. He discussed the adverse effects on both ecosystems and human health, including mood disorders and sleep issues, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this problem. Melton offered actionable steps for individuals to reduce light pollution, such as using lights only when necessary and directing them appropriately. For more information, interested individuals can explore the websites of Bolivar-Harpers Ferry DarkSky and DarkSky International.
