Sara Sami, a Bahraini photographer and travel guide, has found her passion for stargazing in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, specifically at a scenic spot known as the “Edge of the World.” With experiences of seeing thousands of stars in undisturbed darkness, she frequently ventures into the Kingdom’s remote areas, camping to capture the beauty of the Milky Way. Recently, two nature reserves near AlUla were designated as the first Dark Sky Parks in the region, further highlighting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving its night skies. The country is investing in astrotourism, with initiatives aimed at curbing light pollution, which could attract visitors and contribute to the local economy. As interest in stargazing grows, it is entwined with the need for thoughtful lighting design to protect both wildlife and celestial views for generations to come.
