Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is set to enhance Kaikōura’s night sky by replacing old sodium lights along State Highway 1 with energy-efficient LED lights, starting next month. This initiative is part of the district’s accreditation as an international dark sky sanctuary, aimed at protecting the endangered Hutton’s shearwater birds from disorientation caused by street lighting. The new lighting system will direct light downward, improving visibility for pedestrians and drivers while minimizing light spill. Additional upgrades will include intersections throughout the area, with certain upgrades requiring archaeological assessments in collaboration with Takahanga Marae. The Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust is also actively pursuing further international dark community status for the town and peninsula.
