New Zealand’s Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is set to replace old sodium streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights along State Highway 1 in Kaikōura, starting next month. This initiative comes in response to the region’s recent accreditation as an international dark sky sanctuary, aimed at protecting the endangered Hutton’s shearwater birds from becoming disoriented by bright street lighting. The upgrade, which includes improved lighting design to direct light downwards, is expected to enhance visibility for both pedestrians and drivers while reducing the risk to seabirds. The project will also address lighting at key intersections in the area, with construction expected to begin in stages and involve collaboration with local entities, including the Takahanga Marae. The Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust is also seeking to further enhance the region’s dark sky status with an application for international dark community designation.
