Sky Champion: Bill Kowalik

Bill Kowalik, board chair of DarkSky Oregon, is on a mission to combat light pollution in Oregon by advocating for the use of amber or yellow LED lights, which are less harmful to wildlife and human health. With a background in earth sciences, Kowalik emphasizes the negative effects of blue light emitted from conventional LEDs, which contributes to health issues like insomnia and mood disorders. DarkSky Oregon is monitoring light levels across the state, revealing that cities are significantly brighter than darker areas like Hart Mountain. Community efforts in Sisters and Sunriver aim to achieve DarkSky certification, while local businesses like Home Depot and the Springhill Marriott serve as examples for responsible lighting. To raise awareness, Kowalik and other volunteers will participate in Earth Day events, distributing information and free yellow light bulbs, and hosting educational sessions like a lecture at Worthy Brewing during International DarkSky Week from April 21-28.
