Stargazers Enchanted by Dark Skies Event at Historic Castle

On February 1, 2025, Hertford Castle hosted its annual Dark Skies event, a community gathering aimed at celebrating the beauty of the night sky by minimizing artificial light pollution. Recognized by Dark Sky UK, the event featured stargazing, educational talks, and activities including a mobile planetarium showcasing an immersive view of constellations. Local experts from organizations such as LAPD Lighting Design and the University of Hertfordshire’s Bayfordbury Observatory participated, raising awareness about the effects of night lighting on both humans and wildlife. Attendees also enjoyed a screening of “The City Dark,” a documentary addressing light pollution, followed by insights from lighting designer Simon Thorp. Councillor Ann Woodward praised the clear skies and the community’s collaboration in making the event a success.
