Study Reveals Surfboard Accessory That May Reduce Shark Attack Risks

Recent research from Macquarie University indicates that equipping surfboards or kayaks with LED lights can help reduce the risk of great white shark attacks. Led by Dr. Laura Ryan, the study involved testing illuminated seal-shaped decoys in shark-rich waters around Mossel Bay, South Africa. The findings revealed that sharks are less likely to engage with prey that is brightly lit, as the intense illumination disrupts their ability to visually identify potential meals. This is particularly beneficial for surfers, as the bright LEDs serve to camouflage swimmers against the brightness of the surface. Dr. Ryan suggests that this method could be a simple yet effective safety measure for those enjoying waters frequented by sharks. Furthermore, the study highlights that juvenile sharks, who may struggle with visual distinction, are more likely to confuse humans with their natural prey. The team is now working on a prototype surfboard equipped with LED lights to further enhance safety in shark-infested waters.
