Study Suggests LED Lights on Surfboards Could Deter Great White Shark Attacks

A new study conducted by Australian researchers suggests that using LED lights may help prevent great white shark attacks on surfers and kayakers. The research involved experimenting with seal-shaped decoys equipped with underside lighting that obstructed the sharks’ views of silhouettes against the water’s surface. Findings indicated that horizontal lighting was particularly effective in deterring attacks by breaking up the outline of potential prey. Researchers are now looking to develop a surfboard prototype incorporating LEDs, emphasizing the importance of the right brightness and positioning to avoid attracting rather than repelling sharks. While shark attacks on humans are rare, the study highlights the need for further research to refine this technology and its application in various aquatic environments.
