Support Needed for Banks Peninsula Dark Sky Initiative

Luca Devescovi, owner of Akaroa Stargazing, is advocating for the establishment of a dark sky reserve on Banks Peninsula to combat light pollution and support wildlife conservation, particularly the repopulation of the kiwi, which has become extinct in the area. New Zealand currently boasts five certified dark sky areas, and Devescovi believes that with strong community support, Banks Peninsula could become the sixth. He emphasizes the importance of voluntary measures, such as using dimmer bulbs and shielding outdoor lights, to reduce artificial lighting at night without imposing restrictions. To gauge community interest and gather support, Devescovi and Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa Weenink will host public meetings later this month. Their goal is to achieve dark sky certification for the peninsula by year’s end, similar to Kaikōura, which took a decade to gain its status.
