Switch Off Your Lights, Wimberley – Spring Migration Has Arrived!

As Spring migration unfolds from March 1 to June 15, thousands of birds are making their way northward above Hays County, with Bird-Cast reporting over 153,100 birds flying through the area on the night of March 20. This number is set to increase as we approach the peak of migration in late April. Bird enthusiasts can track these avian journeys by visiting BirdCast’s website, which offers data on migratory patterns. While spring and fall migrations are remarkable feats for these birds, they face significant threats, particularly from light pollution, which can lead to disorientation and collisions. The U.S. Fish and wildlife Service acknowledges the dangers posed by night lighting and encourages people to turn off unnecessary lights during migration periods. With ongoing challenges such as habitat loss and avian flu, organizations like Wimberley Valley Dark Sky are advocating for measures to protect these migratory species. More information and updates on bird and light awareness can be found on their Facebook page.
