Teton County, Wyoming, has officially been designated as the world’s first International Dark Sky Community, a recognition achieved through a decade of collaboration among local entities, including the County and the Town of Jackson. This certification, announced by DarkSky International, underscores the County’s efforts to reduce light pollution and preserve its natural environment, which is part of the largest intact ecosystem in North America. Local initiatives include updating land development regulations and a comprehensive exterior lighting inventory aimed at compliance by 2030. Officials believe this designation will not only enhance celestial tourism and public health but also foster wildlife conservation. The initiative is part of a broader goal to designate the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem as an International Dark Sky Reserve, further promoting dark sky protections across the region.
