The small town of Antelope, Oregon, with a population of just 37, has earned the distinction of being the first city in the state to achieve a “Dark Sky Community” certification from DarkSky International. Nestled in Wasco County, Antelope is noted for its clear night skies, with its unofficial motto highlighting the visibility of the Milky Way from Main Street. To secure this certification, the town implemented a new outdoor lighting ordinance, collaborated with Wasco Rural Electric to reduce light pollution, and engaged residents in initiatives aimed at promoting dark sky practices. This designation comes amidst a growing trend in Oregon to preserve dark skies, as seen with previous recognitions for areas like Sunriver and Prineville Reservoir. The initiative not only aims to enhance the community’s night sky visibility but also positions Antelope as a potential destination for astro-tourism.
