This Year's 'Lighting of the Lawn' Soars to New Heights

The University of Virginia celebrated its 24th “Lighting of the Lawn” event with a groundbreaking drone show, the first of its kind at the venue, illuminating the night sky for an enthusiastic crowd braving frigid temperatures. The spectacle featured 100 synchronized drones that formed meaningful shapes, including the jersey numbers of fallen football players Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry, as well as festive symbols like a spinning snowflake and holiday lights. Funded by President Jim Ryan’s Arts on the Hill program and choreographed by Sky Elements, the show came after a student-run light display and was complemented by food vendors and entertainment, creating a vibrant atmosphere for attendees, including families and student groups who participated in singing and dancing.
