Franklin Mountain Energy (FME) has made history by becoming the first oil and gas sites globally to receive DarkSky Certification for three of its locations in the Permian Basin, New Mexico. This recognition by DarkSky International highlights FME’s commitment to responsible lighting practices, aimed at protecting the nighttime environment while ensuring operational safety. The certification stems from significant retrofitting efforts that resulted in a 60% reduction in lighting energy consumption and a 99% decrease in skyglow. The initiative was a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders, including the Dark for the Park Alliance, which aims to enhance night sky quality in the region while balancing the needs of the oil and gas industry. FME’s co-founder Audrey Robertson emphasized the dual commitment to worker safety and environmental stewardship reflected in the project.
