At a recent meeting, parents and student athletes at Grant High School learned they must fund a $15,000 traffic impact study, a significant step in their ongoing campaign to install lights and seating at the Grant Bowl sports field. Neighbors previously called for this study to assess potential traffic issues from increased field utilization but were met with frustration from the Grant Bowl Community Coalition, which ultimately agreed to finance it. The study concluded that installing lights would not affect traffic during peak hours and pose no safety risks for pedestrians or cyclists. Additionally, a separate $5,000 parking survey indicated ample available on-street parking during evening events. These findings have reassured coalition members, who are now moving forward with their application to install the lights, projected to cost between $500,000 and $560,000. As the only 6A school in Oregon without lighting on its sports field, Grant aims to enhance the athletic experience for its teams and foster community support under the “Friday night lights.”
