In a crackdown on unauthorized modifications that may jeopardize road safety, the Transport Department has registered 477 cases against vehicles, particularly private buses adorned with dazzling LED lights, viewed as distractions for drivers. As of 2024-25, fines totaling Rs 23,77,833 have been collected, with Rs 1,03,500 specifically levied for these lighting violations. Transport Minister N Ramalinga Reddy emphasized a zero-tolerance approach during a recent Legislative Council session, reiterating the necessity for public transport vehicles to comply with strict regulations outlined in the Motor Vehicles Act. Despite the focus on lighting, no penalties have yet been imposed for vehicles utilizing DJ sound systems or dance floors. The department has intensified inspections statewide, threatening stricter sanctions for repeat offenders, including suspension of vehicle permits, while urging bus operators to eliminate unauthorized lighting to ensure passenger safety and compliance.
